A power station for your fridge: why one number is not enough
A fridge attracts little attention while the mains is on. During an outage, it makes you consider both the hours ahead and the brief moment when the compressor starts.
Updated:

Quick answer
Check refrigerator compressor startup as well as running watts. Estimate runtime from measured cycling energy, temperature and door-opening patterns. Battery capacity does not establish whether the inverter can start the exact refrigerator.

Fictional household scenario · not a customer account
When this becomes a household question
Imagine a family adding refrigeration to its essential backup list. Average consumption looks modest, so the choice seems straightforward. Yet a battery may hold enough energy for the evening while its station fails to handle that particular compressor start. These are separate checks that are easy to confuse.
Start with your actual fridge
Find the exact model and its documentation. Inverter and conventional compressors can behave differently; another household’s experience cannot replace your equipment data. Do not rely on a single momentary watt reading. Record supply and startup requirements, and take unanswered questions to the manufacturer or a qualified professional.
The compressor takes breaks
Energy over a period matters more than assuming the compressor runs constantly. Room temperature, contents and door opening all change the picture. A representative measurement is more useful than a snapshot. The duty cycle in the example below is an assumption that explains the method, not a description of your fridge.
A worked example with explicit assumptions
This is an illustrative scenario, not a measurement of your appliances: 1,024 Wh capacity, 10% reserve, assumed 85% efficiency and 10 W idle draw. A 42 W average load gives approximately 15.51 hours. For a 12-hour target, the calculated nominal capacity is about 792.16 Wh. Startup demand and output limits require a separate check; this calculation does not establish compatibility.
| Device | Running W | Quantity | Duty cycle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressor, assumed duty cycle | 120 | 1 | 35% |
Leave room for the rest of the evening
The fridge will probably share the station with a router, lights and chargers. Budget those together while checking compressor compatibility separately. Do not turn a runtime estimate into a promise about food storage; the appliance and temperature conditions also matter. Battery percentage is not a food-safety measure.
Fictional conversation · not a customer interview
Talking through the choice
This fictional conversation explains practical questions. The speakers are invented; it is not an interview or a customer account.
- Will enough watt-hours guarantee the fridge starts?
- No. Watt-hours help budget stored energy. Starting the fridge requires a separate check of station output and compressor requirements.
- Can I use a neighbour’s reading for the same fridge?
- It can be a starting assumption, clearly labelled as such. Your own plan is better served by a representative measurement in your conditions.
Before you decide
- Measure cycle or daily energy.
- Check compressor startup.
- Do not apply one duty cycle to every refrigerator.
Common questions
Can annual consumption be used?
Only as a rough guide: label test conditions can differ from your room and usage.
Why can it switch off despite low running watts?
Startup demand or mode limits may be involved. Check compatibility without bypassing protections.
