Extension leads for a power station: current, heating and total load
During an outage, an extension lead becomes part of the backup setup. Sometimes it, rather than the station, determines whether the required appliances can be connected suitably.
Updated:

Quick answer
An extension lead must suit the maximum load and conditions. More sockets do not increase station or cable capacity. Damaged, overheating or unsuitable connections cannot form part of a backup setup.
Fictional household scenario · not a customer account
When this becomes a household question
Imagine a flat with a router, lights and chargers on one extension lead. Someone then wants to add a kettle to a spare socket. An empty socket says nothing about the lead’s current rating or total supported demand.
An empty socket is not spare power
Check the ratings of the cable, plugs and extension assembly using its markings and instructions. Include every connected appliance and the station’s limits. Socket count and length alone do not choose a suitable lead. Unknown ratings need clarification, not a judgement from appearance.
The lead needs suitable conditions too
Keep leads out of door pinch points and walking routes, and do not use damaged or overheated connections. Follow a cable reel’s instructions and the rating for its operating condition. A chain of arbitrary adapters is not a better arrangement if it hides weak points.
A worked example with explicit assumptions
This is an illustrative scenario, not a measurement of your appliances: 2,048 Wh capacity, 10% reserve, assumed 85% efficiency and 10 W idle draw. A 207.5 W average load gives approximately 7.25 hours. For a 2-hour target, the calculated nominal capacity is about 564.71 Wh. Startup demand and output limits require a separate check; this calculation does not establish compatibility.
| Device | Running W | Quantity | Duty cycle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appliance, 15 minutes in 2 hours | 1,500 | 1 | 12.5% |
| Internet equipment | 20 | 1 | 100% |
Recheck demand when a device is added
A lead that supplied a router and lamp is not automatically suitable for a large kitchen load. Check again whenever the device list changes. Energy and current are different issues: a brief task can use few watt-hours while still exceeding a connection’s rating.
Before you decide
- Check the current ratings of all connections.
- Avoid chains of arbitrary adapters.
- Follow cable-reel operating instructions.
Common questions
Do six sockets mean six high-power appliances?
No. Total current, power and every component’s limits determine suitability.
Can a damaged cable be used for a small load?
No. Low power does not remove hazards from damaged insulation or contacts.
