Quick answer

Record running watts, hours, quantity and startup demand for every essential device. Measure cycling equipment over a representative period. Total watt-hours determines capacity; simultaneous watts and startup demand determine inverter requirements.

Fictional household scenario · not a customer account

When this becomes a household question

Imagine a couple adding up their backup needs. The laptop adapter shows its maximum rating, which differs from ordinary working consumption. They borrow a fridge figure from an online post. The total looks precise, but it is only as reliable as those individual rows.

Write down where each number came from

Use four columns: device, power, required hours and where the figure came from. Distinguish measurements, nameplate values and assumptions. Do not treat an adapter’s rating as continuous consumption. A better measurement can then replace one row without rebuilding the whole plan.

Your list needs two totals

If a laptop actually draws 50 W for four hours, it needs about 200 Wh at the load. That does not choose the inverter for you. Separately add the devices that may run together and check startup requirements. Energy over an evening and the highest load at one moment answer different questions.

A worked example with explicit assumptions

This is an illustrative scenario, not a measurement of your appliances: 2,048 Wh capacity, 10% reserve, assumed 85% efficiency and 8 W idle draw. A 54 W average load gives approximately 25.77 hours. For a 8-hour target, the calculated nominal capacity is about 635.82 Wh. Startup demand and output limits require a separate check; this calculation does not establish compatibility.

A fridge needs more than a one-minute reading

A compressor appliance switches between running and resting. A quick meter reading may catch either phase. Budget energy over a representative period, allowing for temperature and household habits. Use a suitably rated meter according to its instructions and check startup separately. Summer observations also do not describe winter heating operation.

Before you decide

  • Label the source of every number.
  • Measure cycling loads over time.
  • Keep separate W and Wh totals.

Common questions

Can I use nameplate watts?

For an initial estimate, yes, but it may be a maximum. Refine actual energy use through measurement.

Why do two families get different results?

Appliances, modes, temperature and use patterns differ. An unconditional runtime list is therefore not a guarantee.
