Quick answer

Check both the router and any separate optical terminal. Small loads can lose a significant share of energy through an active AC inverter. Power in the apartment does not guarantee that the provider’s network remains operational.

Fictional household scenario · not a customer account

When this becomes a household question

Imagine a morning work call. The laptop is charged and the router is on the station, but a separate optical terminal has no power. There are cables and lights, but no connection. This fictional scene shows why checking the entire chain matters more than backing up one socket.

Find every box the connection depends on

Check the router, ONT and any other equipment used by your connection. Record the supply requirements of each; a familiar connector does not establish them. Ask the provider what happens to its network during an outage. A household battery helps only on your side of the connection.

Small loads still have overhead

An AC inverter left running can add meaningful overhead to a small router load. Do not divide all stored watt-hours by router watts and ignore the station’s consumption. Direct DC supply can change the balance, but voltage, current, polarity and connector must all match. An improvised adapter does not establish compatibility.

A worked example with explicit assumptions

This is an illustrative scenario, not a measurement of your appliances: 1,024 Wh capacity, 10% reserve, assumed 85% efficiency and 8 W idle draw. A 18 W average load gives approximately 31.59 hours. For a 12-hour target, the calculated nominal capacity is about 389.02 Wh. Startup demand and output limits require a separate check; this calculation does not establish compatibility.

Try the work call before you need it

Check the approved backup setup and transfer behaviour in advance. Does equipment reboot? Does the connection return? Is another communication option available if the provider is down? A calm rehearsal is more useful than trying the setup for the first time a minute before a meeting.

Before you decide

  • Identify the ONT and other essential devices.
  • Check the provider’s network backup.
  • Include inverter idle draw.

Common questions

Why is internet unavailable while the router is on?

The provider or another unpowered device may be responsible. Check the complete connection path.

Will any USB cable power a router?

No. Voltage, power, polarity and power-delivery protocol must match.
